Students are beginning to use number lines to solve problems about time. 3.MD.1 Students understand time as a continuous measurement through exploration with stopwatches and use the number line, a continuous measurement model, as a tool for counting intervals of minutes within 1 hour (). Students see that an analog clock is a portion of the number line shaped into a circle. They use both the number line and clock to represent addition and subtraction problems involving intervals of minutes within 1 hour (3.MD.1).
Students have now been taught the "RDW" method for solving math word problems. This strategy will help students IMMENSELY on the state test in May, and their depth of math understanding in general! Being able to explain how you got your answer in both pictures and words really separates the men from the boys, so to speak! :)
READ- read the problem. DRAW- draw a picture and label it. WRITE- write an equation and write a sentence. I'm really pushing the "label it" aspect. Students need to understand what the question is asking and what their answer means. |
